About Dun Laoghaire  

Dun Laoghaire is reckoned to be the oldest town in Ireland. It was named in the fifth century after its founder, King Laoghaire, the High King of Ireland. He used the area as a sea-fort (Dun) for when he wished to start raids into France and Britain. King Laoghaire also allowed St Patrick to preach the Christian message around the land of Ireland .

It's major connection to the history of Ireland means that there are festivals almost every week in the summer months from June until September. There are also festivals in the autumn and winter months, with the port and town becoming quite a centre of leisure. There are other attractions such as the National Maritime Museum , the Dun Laoghaire harbour with its East Pier promenade and the James Joyce Tower .

In Dun Laoghaire you can also take a walk around the shops where you can find a variety of goods and services. You can buy authentic Irish goods such as specialist handcrafted pottery, wood carvings, glassware and furniture in the craft and gift shops in the town.

There are also many restaurants offering traditional Irish Fare, or you can go to the pubs, almost every one of which offer early evening and lunch menus.

Should you be approaching Dun Laoghaire from the west - perhaps from Limerick Portlaoise or Galway, you should follow the signs for Dublin until you get to the M50/N81. From there you can follow signs to Dun Laoghaire port.

Should you be coming from the North and the North West you should again follow signs for Dublin then take the Eastlink Toll bridge route, taking the N11 going south for Wexford and the South East, you'll soon find signs for Dun Laoghaire Port.

Coming from the South West and the South, following signs for Dublin you are likely to be coming via Waterford or Kilkenny or Carlow which heads for the N11. When you get to Loughlinstown, which is near Bray you will see signs for Dun Laoghaire Port.

The port is close to Dun Laoghaire 's town centre. If you are travelling along the coast heading for the DART station you'll soon see the signs for the Stena Line Terminal entrance. Should you be travelling through Dun Loaghaire centre you should drive down Marine Road towards the sea, following signs to the terminal.
