About Dun
Laoghaire
Dun Laoghaire is reckoned to be the
oldest town in Ireland. It was named in the fifth
century after its founder, King Laoghaire, the High King
of Ireland. He used the area as a sea-fort (Dun) for
when he wished to start raids intoFrance and Britain. King
Laoghaire also allowed St Patrick to preach the
Christian message around the land of
Ireland .
It's major connection to the history of
Ireland means that there are festivals
almost every week in the summer months from June until
September. There are also festivals in the autumn and
winter months, with the port and town becoming quite a
centre of leisure. There are other attractions such as
the National
Maritime
Museum
, the Dun Laoghaire
harbour with its East Pier promenade and the
James Joyce
Tower.
In Dun
Laoghaire
you can also take a walk around the shops where you can
find a variety of goods and services. You can buy
authentic Irish goods such as specialist handcrafted
pottery, wood carvings, glassware and furniture in the
craft and gift shops in the town.
There are also many restaurants offering
traditional Irish Fare, or you can go to the pubs,
almost every one of which offer early evening and lunch
menus.
Should you be approaching Dun Laoghaire from the
west - perhaps from Limerick Portlaoise or Galway, you
should follow the signs for Dublin until you get to the
M50/N81. From there you can follow signs to Dun Laoghaire
port.
Should you be coming from the North and the
North West you should
again follow signs for Dublin then take the Eastlink
Toll bridge route, taking the N11 going south for
Wexford and the South East, you'll soon find signs for
Dun Laoghaire Port.
Coming from the South West and the South,
following signs for Dublin you are likely to be coming
via
Waterford or
Kilkenny or Carlow which heads for the N11. When you get
to Loughlinstown, which is near Bray you will see signs
for Dun Laoghaire
Port.
The port is close to
Dun Laoghaire's town centre. If you are
travelling along the coast heading for the DART station
you'll soon see the signs for the Stena Line Terminal
entrance. Should you be travelling through Dun Loaghaire
centre you should drive down
Marine Road towards the sea, following
signs to the terminal.
